Plain-English summary
Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. is recalling approximately 2.1 million drop-side cribs sold in the United States and Canada. The recall covers cribs manufactured and distributed between January 1993 and October 2009, including models with the Fisher-Price logo manufactured between October 1997 and December 2004. The cribs were sold at major retailers such as BJ's Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart, as well as online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com, for prices between $100 and $400.
The recall was issued because the drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or have missing parts. Additionally, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, leading to broken or disengaged parts. These issues can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners, creating a space between the drop-side and the mattress where infants and toddlers can become entrapped, leading to suffocation. The firm is aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment, including 15 entrapments. Four of these entrapments resulted in the suffocation of infants in New York, Louisiana, and West Virginia. The incidents also included 20 falls from cribs, with injuries ranging from concussion to bumps and bruises.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should not attempt to fix the cribs without the official repair kit. To receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side to a fixed side, consumers should contact Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 or visit www.storkcraft.com.
