Hewlett-Packard Co. is expanding its recall of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries used in various HP and Compaq notebook computers. The recall covers approximately 54,000 additional units, following a previous recall of 70,000 units in May 2009. These batteries were sold at computer and electronics stores nationwide, as well as through hp.com and hpshopping.com, between August 2007 and July 2008 for prices ranging from $500 to $3,000.
The recalled batteries can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. Since the initial recall in May 2009, HP has received 38 additional reports of batteries overheating and rupturing. These incidents resulted in 11 instances of minor personal injury and 31 instances of minor property damage.
Consumers should immediately remove the batteries from their notebook computers and contact HP to determine if their specific battery is included in this recall, even if it was previously checked. Those with recalled batteries will receive a free replacement. HP recommends using only batteries obtained from HP or an authorized reseller.
