HP Recalls Lithium-Ion Notebook Batteries Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

HP Inc. is expanding a recall of approximately 101,000 lithium-ion batteries used in HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion notebook computers. These batteries, which contain Panasonic cells, were shipped with computers sold between March 2013 and October 2016. The black batteries measure about 8 to 10.5 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 1 inch high, and feature specific bar code prefixes including 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL, and 6EBVA.

The recall is being issued because the batteries can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. HP has received one additional report of a battery overheating, melting, and charring, which caused approximately $1,000 in property damage. This expanded recall includes an additional 41,000 batteries previously recalled in June 2016, with about 3,000 sold in Canada and 4,000 in Mexico.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled batteries and remove them from their notebook computers. They should contact HP for a free replacement battery. Until a replacement is received, consumers should use the notebook computer by plugging it into AC power only. HP urges consumers to recheck their batteries, as some previously identified as not affected by the June 2016 recall may be included in this expanded announcement.
