Plain-English summary

Hewlett-Packard Company is expanding its recall of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries used in various HP and Compaq notebook computer models. The recall covers approximately 162,600 additional batteries, in addition to 54,000 and 70,000 batteries recalled in May 2010 and May 2009, respectively. The affected batteries were sold at computer and electronics stores nationwide, as well as through hp.com and hpshopping.com, from July 2007 through July 2008.

The recalled batteries can overheat and rupture, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. Since the May 2010 recall expansion, HP has received 40 additional reports of batteries that overheated and ruptured. These incidents resulted in seven burn injuries, one smoke inhalation injury, and 36 instances of property damage.

Consumers should immediately remove the batteries from their notebook computers and contact HP to determine if their specific battery is included in this recall. Those who previously checked and were told their battery was not affected are urged to check again. Consumers with recalled batteries will receive a free replacement battery. In the meantime, the AC adapter can be used to power the computer until the replacement arrives.
