Plain-English summary
Delta Faucet Co. is recalling approximately 105,000 Universal MultiChoice Valves used in residential bathtubs and showers. These valves, sold under the Delta brand, are located inside the water control knobs and are designed to regulate water temperature. The recall is due to a defect where the device that limits hot water flow can disengage after being manually set. This failure allows water to flow at temperatures hotter than expected, creating a risk of scalding injuries for consumers.
The affected valves were sold nationwide to commercial plumbers and building subcontractors from March 2006 to May 2006, and specifically in Indiana and Ohio from October 2005 to May 2006. Plumbing packages containing these valve cartridges were sold for between $80 and $200, while separate replacement cartridges were sold for about $30. Delta Faucet has received six reports of incidents involving these valves, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should exercise caution when adjusting the temperature on faucets with these valves, as the water may be hotter than anticipated. It is recommended to always test the water temperature before entering a tub or shower. Delta Faucet is contacting consumers with the recalled valves to provide a free upgrade kit. Those who have not received a kit can contact Delta Faucet at (800) 336-6696 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. CT Monday through Saturday, or visit www.deltafaucet.com.
