Shell Diving Inflation Valves Recalled Due to Hypothermia Risk
SI Tech is recalling approximately 1,670 Shell Diving Inflation Valves with International Nipples used in diving dry suits. The internal valve part can malfunction during use, causing loss of inflation and thermal protection, which poses a risk of hypothermia.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recalled valves pose a risk of hypothermia—a serious health hazard—if the internal part malfunctions during diving. Although no injuries have been reported, the risk-of-harm product meets the High severity threshold because the hazard is significant and poses documented potential for serious injury, even in the absence of actual reported harm.
Plain-English summary
SI Tech, of Sweden, is recalling approximately 1,670 Shell Diving Inflation Valves with International Nipples sold in the United States, plus approximately 28 sold in Canada. These valves are used in recreational and technical diving dry suits and were sold separately for about $100 per valve.
The recalled valves contain an internal part that can malfunction while in use. When this occurs, the valve loses the ability to inflate the dry suit, which eliminates the thermal protection it provides to the diver. SI Tech has received three reports of this malfunction resulting in loss of inflation in the dry suit. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled valves were sold nationwide through retailers including Underwater Development in Tulalip, Washington; Aquala Diving in Shreveport, Louisiana; Underwater Sports in Seattle, Washington; other dive dealers and centers; and other dive suit manufacturers and distributors. Sales occurred from April 2019 through May 2021. The valve model numbers and batch codes are stamped on the inside of the valve.
Consumers should immediately stop using dry suits with the recalled inflation valve and contact Ocean Equipment for a return shipping information form. The defective valve will be replaced free of charge by authorized technicians. Contact Ocean Equipment at 800-657-7736 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or online at https://oceanequipment.ca/ and click on "Recall Notice" at the top of the page; or visit https://www.sitech.se/articles/recall.aspx.
