The recall involves specific model numbers, including HB-5501, HB-5600, and WH-7801, among others. Only quick releases with silver skewers and without a round sticker on the back of the lever are affected.

The quick release skewers can unexpectedly fail or break while locked in position. If this occurs, the rider could lose control of the bicycle and fall. Shimano has received one report of a quick release breaking, but no injuries have been reported.

These devices were sold at bicycle specialty stores and dealers nationwide from November 2005 through March 2006 for between $13 and $44. Consumers should stop riding immediately and take the quick release device to a local bike dealer or retailer for a free inspection and repair.
