Andersen Corporation is recalling tilt latches on the lower sash of the Andersen 200 Series Tilt-Wash Double-Hung Windows. The recall involves approximately 400,000 units. These windows are identified by the Andersen "A/W" logo etched into the lower right corner of the glass, latches on both sides of the top of the lower sash, and a product label on the inside of the upper left corner of the window frame. This recall does not apply to Andersen Builder's Select or other Andersen products.
The latches on the lower sash can unexpectedly open, which poses a potential injury hazard to consumers who may be struck by the window or shattered glass. Andersen has received 11 reports of the latches unexpectedly opening, but there have been no reports of injuries.
The majority of these windows were installed by home builders in new homes, while independent dealers and home centers nationwide sold them to contractors between May 2000 and August 2001. Consumers should immediately ensure the latches are in the closed position and call the Andersen WindowCare Solution Center to schedule a free in-home repair. Parents should ensure children do not operate the windows until the latches are replaced.
