Each campaign is identified by an NHTSA Campaign Number (a string like 25V123000) and lists every make / model / year combination affected. The most common vehicle-recall categories are airbag and seatbelt failures (the consequence is non-deployment in a crash), fuel system defects with fire risk, steering or brake malfunctions, electrical defects in EVs that can cause battery thermal events, software bugs in driver-assist systems, and child-seat harness failures. Recalls for tires almost always relate to a tread-separation risk in a defined production date range.
Every NHTSA recall is mandatory for the manufacturer to remedy at no charge to the owner, with no expiration. If your vehicle has an open recall, your dealer is required to perform the remedy free of charge as long as the vehicle exists. Chrysler is recalling certain Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models (2021–2024) due to a software issue that may prevent the rearview display from showing when backing up. This violates federal rear-visibility standards.
Certain 2023 Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 trucks with the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature may not display the rearview camera image, reducing rear visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
