About consumer product recalls

Consumer product recalls in our database come from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC oversees more than 15,000 categories of products you'd encounter in a household — toys, baby gear, furniture, appliances, electronics, batteries, recreational and sporting equipment, kitchenware. CPSC excludes anything covered by another federal agency: it doesn't touch food, drugs, vehicles, firearms, or boats.

The hazards trend toward predictable categories. Lithium-ion batteries that overheat or ignite (especially in e-bikes, scooters, portable chargers, and laptops). Choking hazards in toys and juvenile products, often when small parts detach with normal use. Fall and tip-over risk in furniture, especially dressers and bookcases. Lead paint or banned phthalates in imported children's products. Magnet-set ingestion risk, which surges every few years as new product variants reach the market. Strangulation hazards on window-covering cords, which CPSC has been trying to eliminate by industry standard for over a decade.

The remedy is almost always a free replacement, refund, or repair kit through the manufacturer. CPSC publishes the manufacturer's contact information on each recall page; that's the right place to start. Don't simply throw the recalled product away — if the hazard is fire, lithium, or lead, follow the disposal guidance in the recall notice.
