Plain-English summary

phil&teds USA Inc. is recalling Explorer and Hammerhead strollers due to a risk of injury from brake failure. The recalled strollers have metal frames and were sold as single strollers or with a doubles kit. The Explorer model has three wheels, while the Hammerhead model has four. Both models feature a cloth seat and canopy. The Explorer was sold in black, apple green, navy, red/black, and apple green/black, while the Hammerhead was sold in black only. The phil&teds logo is located on the crotch piece of the harness, and model identification text is printed on a sticker on the rear axle bar. Affected serial numbers range from 0610/0001 to 0111/4788, found on a sticker attached to the inside of the left-hand hinge.

The brake mechanism on these strollers can fail, which poses an injury hazard. Eight incidents have been reported globally, none in North America, and no injuries have been reported. The strollers were manufactured in China and sold online at philandteds.com, pishposhbaby.com, and albeebaby.com, as well as at Babies R Us and specialty juvenile retailers in the United States and Canada from August 2010 through June 2011. The retail price was between $475 and $500. Approximately 7,400 Explorer strollers and 160 Hammerhead strollers were sold in the U.S., with 1,900 Explorer and 65 Hammerhead strollers sold in Canada.

Consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact phil&teds to arrange to receive an upgraded brake assembly. Explorer owners will receive a new frame fitted with an upgraded brake assembly, which can be swapped out at home. Hammerhead owners will receive a pre-paid return shipping container to return the stroller to phil&teds for brake assembly replacement.
