Ford Mustang water ingress can disable tail and marker lights

Ford is recalling certain 2024-2025 Mustang and Mustang GTD vehicles because water may enter the body control module and cut communication with the licence plate, side marker and tail lights.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: rear and marker lighting may fail, reducing conspicuity to other drivers, while the vehicle retains control and propulsion.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2024-2025 Mustang and Mustang GTD vehicles. About 105,545 units are potentially affected.

Water may enter the body control module and cause a loss of communication with the exterior lighting, including the licence plate light, side marker and tail lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment".

NHTSA states that licence plate, side marker and tail lights that fail to illuminate as intended can reduce visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect and seal the body seams as necessary, and inspect the body control module for corrosion and replace it if necessary. Repairs are free of charge. Owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
