Western Star 47X and 49X Trucks Battery Stud Defect Fire Risk

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain 2020-2026 Western Star 47X and 49X trucks due to an incorrectly installed battery-to-starter connection that may cause electrical short circuits and increase the risk of fire.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall addresses a fire risk in commercial trucks caused by an electrical system defect. Although no injuries, deaths, or property damage have been reported, the hazard presents a genuine risk of harm, placing this at Score 3 (High) per the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling certain 2020-2026 Western Star 47X and 49X commercial trucks. The recall affects 22,271 vehicles due to a potential defect in the electrical system.

A stud connecting the battery to the starter at the frame rail may have been incorrectly installed during manufacturing. This incorrect installation can cause a short circuit in the 12V/24V/48V battery system, which increases the risk of fire.

No injuries or deaths have been reported related to this defect. Owners received notification letters on July 1, 2025. DTNA will repair affected vehicles free of charge by inspecting and replacing damaged cables and loose hardware, properly tightening hardware, and installing dielectric tape as necessary. Owners should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to schedule repairs. This recall (DTNA recall number F1020) has been replaced by NHTSA recall number 26V079; vehicles already repaired under this initial recall will need the new remedy completed.
