Volkswagen ID. Buzz third-row bench seats three but has two belts

Volkswagen is recalling certain 2025 ID. Buzz vehicles because the third-row bench is wide enough for three passengers but is designed for two and has only two seat belts, failing FMVSS 208.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: the bench physically accommodates a third passenger who would have no restraint at all, so occupant protection is absent rather than degraded, and the remedy is a physical change to the seat.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2025 ID. Buzz vehicles. About 5,644 units are potentially affected.

The third-row rear bench is wide enough for three passengers, but is designed for two passengers and equipped with two seat belts. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection".

NHTSA states that if more than two passengers sit in the rear bench seat, there would not be enough seat belts, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Dealers will install trim to adjust the width of the third-row rear seats, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 20, 2025. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
