Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition Seat Belt Pretensioner Defect

Ford is recalling 2018-2022 Lincoln Navigator and Expedition vehicles because the seat belt pretensioner may lock, preventing the belt from extending or retracting. This could fail to restrain occupants properly in a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This is a confirmed structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system. Although no injuries have been reported, the seat belt malfunction directly compromises occupant restraint in crashes, meeting the rubric criterion for Severe (structural vehicle defect).

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2018-2022 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition vehicles (approximately 419,967 vehicles total). The seat belt pretensioner in the driver and/or front passenger seat may inadvertently lock the seat belt, preventing it from extending or retracting normally.

When a seat belt is locked in this manner, it cannot function as intended to restrain an occupant during a crash. This increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants who may not be properly secured.

Ford will repair affected vehicles at no cost. Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt retractors as necessary. Owners should expect to receive an interim notification letter around June 8, 2026, with additional letters to follow once the remedy becomes available in August 2026. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for questions. This recall (Ford number 26S34) replaces and expands previous NHTSA recalls 24V099 and 25V197; vehicles already repaired under those recalls will need the new repair completed.
