BMW 2024-2025 X5, X6, X7, XM, and Alpina XB7 Seat Belt Detection System Defect

BMW recalls certain 2024-2025 X5, X6, X7, XM, and Alpina XB7 models due to a seat belt detection system defect that may fail to alert drivers of unbuckled passengers or allow proper deployment of the supplemental restraint system.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the seat belt detection system that could prevent proper deployment of the supplemental restraint system during a crash. Although no injuries have been reported, the safety system malfunction poses a serious risk of injury or death in crash scenarios, meeting the criteria for a structural vehicle safety defect.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2024 XM, 2025 X5, X6, X7, and Alpina XB7 vehicles due to a defect in the seat belt detection system. The system may incorrectly determine that passengers are belted, which prevents the seat belt warning light from activating and could cause the supplemental restraint system to deploy improperly during a crash.

These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, which requires proper occupant crash protection. The affected vehicles include 2024 XM models and 2025 X5 (sDrive40i, xDrive40i, M60i, M, and xDrive50e), X6 (xDrive40i, M60i, and M), X7 (xDrive40i and M60i), and Alpina XB7 models. A total of approximately 3,256 units are affected.

Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 12, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
