2023 BMW XM and 2024 X5-X7 vehicles recalled for knee air bag defect
BMW of North America is recalling 2023 XM and certain 2024 X5, X6, and X7 vehicles because the knee air bag may not have been manufactured correctly and could fail to deploy during a crash. Dealers will replace the air bag free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a manufacturing defect in a critical safety component that may not deploy as intended in a collision. Although no injuries or deaths have been reported and the hazard is currently theoretical, a non-deploying air bag represents a significant risk of injury, warranting a High severity rating.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America is recalling approximately 1,981 certain 2023 XM and 2024 X5, X6, and X7 vehicles. The knee air bag system (driver and/or passenger) may not have been manufactured correctly, potentially preventing the air bag from deploying as intended in a collision.
A knee air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
