2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Differential Defect Recall for Gear Bolt Issue

Hyundai is recalling 2024 Ioniq 6 vehicles because differential gear bolts in the drive unit may not be properly tightened. This defect can cause loss of drive power or differential lock-up, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the affected component for free.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a documented structural defect in the differential drive unit that could cause loss of drive power or lock-up and increase crash risk, but no injuries have been reported. It meets the criterion for risk-of-harm vehicles where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2024 Ioniq 6 vehicles. The differential gear bolts in the gear drive unit may not be tightened properly at the factory.

If the bolts are inadequately tightened, the differential can lose drive power or lock up while you are driving. A loss of drive power or differential lock-up can increase the risk of a crash.

Hyundai is replacing the entire gear drive unit for all affected vehicles at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 17, 2024. If you own one of these vehicles, contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 to schedule service. You can also contact NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
