2024 Lexus ES vehicles recalled for rearview camera display delay
Toyota is recalling certain 2024 Lexus ES vehicles and related models due to incorrect parking assist software that can cause the rearview camera to delay displaying an image after the shifter is placed in reverse.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall addresses a critical safety system (rear visibility required by FMVSS 111) with a confirmed defect that increases crash risk, though no crashes or injuries have been reported. The software defect is verified but the potential for actual harm has not yet been realized.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2024 Lexus ES vehicles, along with 2023-2024 Lexus LS, LC, and ES Hybrid models, and 2023 Toyota Mirai vehicles, that are equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor system. The rearview camera image may not display immediately within a couple of seconds after the shifter is placed into reverse gear due to incorrect programming of the parking assist electronic control unit (ECU) software.
This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, which establishes rear visibility requirements. A rearview camera that fails to display promptly can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash when backing up.
The recall affects approximately 18,616 vehicles. Dealers will update the parking assist ECU software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or reach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
