Multiple Freightliner and Western Star Trucks Recalled for Electronic Stability Control Defect
Daimler Trucks is recalling certain 2020-2024 Freightliner and Western Star trucks with an electronic stability control system that may cause understeering, increasing crash risk. Free tire replacement is being offered.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect affecting electronic stability control during a safety-critical maneuver. However, no injuries or crashes have been reported, making this a potential safety hazard rather than an actualized one, meeting the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has recalled certain heavy-duty trucks equipped with an electronic stability control (ESC) system and tire combination that do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 136. The ESC system and tire combination may cause the vehicle to understeer during a J-turn maneuver, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall affects 266 vehicles, including 2020-2024 Freightliner Cascadia, 2021-2024 Freightliner Business Class M2, 2022 Western Star 4700, and 2020 Freightliner Classic Cascadia trucks.
DTNA will replace the affected tires at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 19, 2023. Owners should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
