Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star trucks recalled for brake defect
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain 2017-2023 Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star trucks. Corroded brake modulator valves may cause vehicles to pull to one side during braking, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural brake system defect—corrosion of brake modulator valves causing uneven braking and uncontrolled vehicle pull. This directly compromises vehicle control and safety on commercial trucks, meeting the criterion for a structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain Freightliner Cascadia (model years 2017–2023), Western Star 49X (model years 2020–2023), Western Star 47X (model years 2021–2023), and Freightliner 114SD (model year 2022). The brake modulator valves on the front axle of these vehicles may corrode, causing the vehicle to pull to one side when braking is initiated by the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Roll Stability Control (RSC) systems.
When brake force is applied unevenly, the vehicle may pull to the affected side, potentially causing a sudden and unexpected change in vehicle direction. This increases the risk of a crash.
Owners should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to arrange service. Dealers will inspect and replace the front brake modulator valves as necessary at no cost. Some vehicles will receive a software update that alerts the driver when a replacement is required. Owner notification letters began mailing on October 13, 2023. For additional information, owners can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
