Brake modulator corrosion recall on Freightliner and Western Star commercial trucks
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star models due to corrosion in front brake modulator valves. The defect may cause brakes to pull to one side during automated braking, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system (brakes). The defect causes loss of directional control during automated braking, directly increasing crash risk. Per the rubric, structural vehicle defects warrant a Severe classification.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC is recalling certain Freightliner Cascadia (2017-2023), Freightliner Business Class M2 (2020-2022), Freightliner 114SD (2022), and Western Star 49X, 47X, and 57X models (various years 2020-2023). Approximately 219,390 vehicles are affected.
The front brake modulator valves on these vehicles may corrode, causing them to malfunction during Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) braking events. When this occurs, the vehicle's brakes may pull to one side, causing a sudden change in vehicle direction.
A sudden loss of directional control during braking increases the risk of a crash. Owners should contact an authorized dealer immediately to have the valves inspected and replaced if necessary.
Repairs will be performed at no cost. Notification letters were mailed beginning October 16, 2023. For additional information, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
