2022 RAM 1500 Front Seat Belt Retractors Recalled Due to Defect
Certain 2022 RAM 1500 vehicles have front seat belt retractors with improperly welded components that may fail to restrain occupants during a crash. Chrysler is replacing the affected retractors free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No injuries have been reported, and the hazard is theoretical—the seat belt failure risk manifests only in a crash scenario. Per the rubric, theoretical hazards without reported injuries score at most 3 (High) and qualify as risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler is recalling certain 2022 RAM 1500 vehicles (along with 2022 Jeep Gladiator and 2021 Jeep Wrangler models) due to a defect in the front seat belt retractors. The retractors contain micro gas generators that may have been improperly welded, causing the seat belt pretensioner to fail.
A seat belt pretensioner that fails may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. No injuries have been reported to date.
An estimated 2,802 vehicles are affected. Owners should contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 to schedule replacement of the front seat belt retractors, which will be provided free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 8, 2022. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at www.nhtsa.gov or 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
