Freightliner Custom Chassis Trucks Recalled for Tire Valve Stem Damage
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2017-2023 Freightliner Custom Chassis trucks due to damaged tire valve stem extensions that may lose pressure, increasing crash risk. Dealers will remove the valve stem extensions and stabilizers at no charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural component defect affecting a critical safety system (tire pressure retention), creating real potential for crashes. However, no injuries, deaths, or property damage incidents have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injuries score 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2017-2023 Freightliner Custom Chassis vehicles, including models XCL, XCM, XCS, MC, XCR, XBR, XBS, MBC, MT55, S2C, S2G, and S2RV. The tire valve stem extensions for the inner wheels may come into contact with and become damaged by the outer wheel rim openings.
Damage to the valve stem extension may result in a loss of tire pressure in the inner wheel, which increases the risk of a crash.
Approximately 16,676 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 18, 2022. Dealers will remove the inner valve stem extensions and stabilizers free of charge. This recall supersedes and expands recall 20V-529; vehicles previously repaired under that recall will need to have the new remedy completed.
