2021 Audi E-Tron recalled for brake booster defect

Volkswagen is recalling certain 2021 Audi E-Tron models due to improperly welded brake boosters that may separate, reducing braking assistance and stability control.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural defect in a critical safety system (brakes) that could compromise vehicle control, but no injuries, deaths, or property damage have been reported. The hazard is theoretically serious but remains unmanifested in actual harm.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2021 Audi E-Tron Quattro and 2020-2021 Audi E-Tron Sportback Quattro vehicles. The affected vehicles have brake booster systems with improperly welded rotors and shafts that may separate over time.

If the rotor and shaft separate within the integrated brake system, the vehicle may experience reduced braking assistance and lose the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). This increases the risk of a crash.

Approximately 498 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owners should contact their Audi dealer to schedule a free brake booster replacement. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 14, 2021. For more information, owners may call Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
