2021-2022 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks recalled for improperly torqued flywheel attachment

PACCAR is recalling certain 2021-2022 Kenworth and Peterbilt heavy trucks equipped with Cummins X15 engines. The flywheel attachment capscrews may be improperly torqued, risking flywheel detachment and loss of drive power.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves risk of serious harm from a mechanical defect (improperly torqued flywheel attachment capscrews) that could cause loss of drive power and ejection of engine components on commercial vehicles. However, no illnesses, injuries, or reported incidents are documented, placing this in the risk-of-harm category without reported harm.

Plain-English summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain 2021-2022 model year Kenworth (T680, T880, W990, T800, W900) and Peterbilt (579, 567, 389, 367) heavy trucks equipped with Cummins X15 engines. The capscrews that attach the flywheel to the crankshaft may have been improperly torqued during manufacturing.

When flywheel attachment capscrews are improperly torqued, the flywheel can detach from the crankshaft. A detached flywheel can cause loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, pieces of the driveline may be ejected from the engine compartment, creating a risk of injury.

Approximately 132 vehicles are potentially affected. PACCAR will notify owners, and Kenworth and Peterbilt dealers will properly torque the capscrews at no charge. The engine will also be inspected for damage and repaired if necessary. Owners can contact PACCAR customer service at 1-425-828-5888 (Kenworth) or 1-940-591-4220 (Peterbilt), or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). The recall began on March 29, 2021.
