2020-2021 Audi Q7 recalled for premature air bag deployment hazard
The air bag control module in certain 2020-2021 Audi Q7 vehicles may deploy the second stage of the front passenger air bag too quickly when an unbelted child is in the seat, increasing injury risk. Audi will update the module at no cost.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect in the air bag control module that could increase injury risk to unbelted child passengers. However, no injuries or deaths are reported in the source text, limiting it to the maximum threshold for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet occurred.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2020 and 2021 Audi Q7 vehicles, with approximately 26,967 vehicles affected. The air bag control module software may cause the second stage of the front passenger air bag to deploy too quickly after the first stage deploys.
When the front passenger seat is occupied by an unbelted child, the rapid deployment of the second stage air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208, which requires proper occupant crash protection.
Audi will notify owners, and authorized dealers will update the air bag control module at no cost. The recall began on March 5, 2021. Owners can contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 (Audi recall number 69BV) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
