What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect involving critical engine components. Improper torque on the flywheel attachment could cause loss of drive power, creating crash risk, and driveline piece ejection causing injury risk. No incidents have been reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling 2021-2022 Freightliner Cascadia vehicles equipped with Cummins X15 engines. The capscrews that attach the flywheel to the crankshaft may have been improperly torqued during manufacturing.
If improperly torqued, the flywheel could detach from the crankshaft. This would result in loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, creating a risk of injury to people in or near the vehicle.
DTNA will work with Cummins Inc. to notify owners. Cummins dealers will retorque the capscrews to proper specifications, inspect for damage, and repair any damage found at no charge to the owner.
Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov for more information.
