Freightliner Cascadia CNG Vehicles Recalled for Exhaust Fire Risk
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2013-2015 Freightliner Cascadia CNG vehicles because hot exhaust near the pressure relief device may cause gas release and fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where hot exhaust may cause CNG release, creating a significant fire risk. This aligns with the rubric criterion for 'structural vehicle defect' or 'significant injury/property-damage reports' (fire risk).
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Freightliner Cascadia vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The affected vehicles were manufactured between March 27, 2015, and November 4, 2014. The defect involves a tailpipe design that allows hot exhaust to exit near the CNG tank pressure relief device (PRD).
The proximity of hot exhaust to the PRD may cause the device to activate, resulting in the unexpected release of CNG from the tank. If the released CNG encounters an ignition source, it can increase the risk of a fire.
According to the recall notice, all vehicles involved in this campaign have already been repaired. The recall began on March 13, 2015. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 for more information. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-695.
