Freightliner Trucks Recalled for CNG Fuel System Overheating Risk
Daimler Trucks is recalling 2011-2015 Freightliner M2 and Cascadia trucks because the tailpipe placement may overheat the compressed natural gas fuel system, increasing fire risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (exhaust placement) that explicitly increases the risk of a vehicle fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for 'Severe' (structural vehicle defect or significant injury/property-damage reports).
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America LLC is recalling certain model year 2011-2015 Freightliner Cascadia and M2 trucks manufactured between June 2, 2011, and October 23, 2014. These vehicles are not in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 303 regarding fuel system integrity for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
The defect involves the tailpipe terminating under the CNG tank. This placement forces heat around the fuel system components, which can cause them to overheat and increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
Dealers will extend the tailpipe beyond the cabinet free of charge to correct the issue. The recall began on February 12, 2015. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-745-8000 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
