What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).
The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fuel system defect that could lead to a leak and subsequent fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire hazards.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Freightliner Cascadia trucks. The recall affects trucks manufactured between November 19, 2013, and July 14, 2014, that are equipped with specific Side-Mount compressed natural gas (CNG) Fuel Systems and Motion Industries T1700-06 flexible fuel hoses.
The defect involves the stainless steel braid hose reinforcement, which may corrode prematurely near the fitting crimp inside the slave tank enclosure. If this corrosion progresses and goes undetected, the hose could begin to leak CNG, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.
DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective hose free of charge. The recall began on April 1, 2015. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-745-8000 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
