Commercial trucks recalled for incorrect axle weight rating labels
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling approximately 53 units of 2020-2021 Western Star and Freightliner commercial trucks due to incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating information on vehicle certification labels. This could lead to axle overloading and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product—a safety-critical labeling defect affecting vehicle structural compliance (FMVSS #120)—where incorrect weight rating information could result in axle overloading and increased crash risk. No injuries have been reported, limiting the score to High per the rubric criterion for theoretical hazards without reported harm.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Western Star 4700 and 4900 vehicles, along with Freightliner Coronado, 108SD, and 114SD models. The vehicle certification labels contain incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) information that exceeds tire capacity ratings.
These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 120, which covers wheels and rims. The incorrect weight rating information on the certification labels could result in potential overloading of the axles, which increases the risk of a crash.
Owners will be notified by DTNA, and dealers will install accurate GAWR labels at no charge. The recall began November 25, 2020. For more information, owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
