Western Star and Freightliner trucks recalled for suspension hardware defect
Daimler Trucks recalls 2020-2021 Western Star 4700 and 4900, and Freightliner 114SD and 122SD trucks due to suspension axle hardware that may be insufficiently long to engage locking nuts, creating road hazards and crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: While this involves a structural vehicle suspension defect, no illnesses or injuries have been reported in the source text, and the hazard is described in theoretical terms ('may separate', 'increasing the risk'). This fits the High category for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Western Star 4700 and 4900, and Freightliner 114SD and 122SD trucks equipped with SL2065 steerable lift axles. The lower rear pivot cap screws on these suspension components may not be long enough to sufficiently engage the locking feature of the corresponding nuts.
If the screws are not long enough to engage the nuts, the hardware may separate from the suspension system. This hardware separation becomes a road hazard and increases the risk of a crash and/or injury.
The recall affects an estimated 103 vehicles. Owners should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to schedule a dealer inspection. Dealers will inspect the lower rear pivot cap screws for proper length and correct the hardware as necessary at no charge. The recall began October 30, 2020.
