Altec Aerial Devices Recalled for Unintended Boom Movement During Idle
Altec is recalling 2015-2018 aerial devices because a software issue can cause the boom to move unexpectedly during an engine cycle, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where unintended boom movement increases the risk of injury, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Altec Industries Inc. is recalling certain 2015-2018 LR7, ALB, AC18, AC23, and AC38 aerial devices built on an International N9/N10 chassis. The recall involves 17 vehicles.
During an HC Desorb cycle, the vehicle's idle may rapidly rise, causing an increase in pump flow. This increased flow can result in the moving speed of the boom changing, leading to unintended positioning of the boom. This condition increases the risk of injury.
Altec will notify owners, and dealers will install an update that reprograms the low idle preset to 850 RPM, free of charge. The recall began on October 16, 2020. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
