What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect in the fuel system involving a component that can overheat, melt, and cause fire. The potential for fire and engine stalling that could lead to loss of vehicle control creates serious injury and crash risk, meeting the criterion of structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
Navistar is recalling certain 2017-2020 International DuraStar and WorkStar models, as well as 2018-2021 IC bus models and International MV and HV vehicles equipped with Cummins B6.7 diesel engines and fuel modules with option numbers FS90301 or FS90453. Approximately 27,421 vehicles are potentially affected.
The electric fuel heater within the fuel module may overheat, causing plastic to melt and potentially catch fire. An overheating fuel heater may also lead to engine stalling, which increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy for the recall began May 28, 2020. Dealers will disable the fuel heater by installing a plug or otherwise rendering the heater inoperable, removing the fuse supplying electrical power, and installing a cover over the wire harness connector. This service is provided free of charge.
Owners should contact Cummins customer service at 1-800-286-6467 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for information. More details are available at www.safercar.gov.
