MCI Recalls 2018 J4500 Coaches Due to Taillight Wiring Defect
Motor Coach Industries is recalling 2018 J4500 vehicles because a wiring harness may contact the coolant tank, causing the left taillight to fail and reducing visibility.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect causes a loss of required lighting, increasing the risk of a crash, which fits the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2018 J4500 vehicles. The recall addresses a defect where the left rear taillight harness branch in the engine compartment may contact the engine coolant tank. This contact can cause a loss of power to the left taillight, resulting in non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108.
If the left taillight does not work, the vehicle has reduced visibility to other drivers, which increases the risk of a crash. The recall began on April 23, 2018.
MCI will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left taillight wiring harness, re-routing and repairing it as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
