Volvo Recalls 2017 Models for Side Air Bag Inflator Defect
Volvo is recalling 2017 S60, V60, and XC60 vehicles because side air bag inflators may fail to ignite, preventing deployment in a crash.
What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 3/5 (High).
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bags) that may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Volvo Car USA LLC is recalling certain 2017 S60, S60CC, V60, V60 Cross Country, and XC60 vehicles. The affected vehicles have driver and front passenger seat side-mounted side air bags with inflator initiators that may fail to ignite during a crash. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and number 214, "Side Impact Protection."
If the air bag inflator initiator fails to ignite, the air bag will not deploy, which increases the risk of injury. The recall began on March 31, 2017, and is an expansion of recall 16V-918.
Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front seat side air bags free of charge. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R89712. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
