The recall addresses a defect in the driver or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanism where a bracket may have been incorrectly welded to the seat-back frame. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 202a, "Head Restraints."

In the event of a crash, the front seat-backs may break, which increases the risk of injury to the occupants. The head restraints may also not function properly due to the structural failure of the seat-back.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front passenger seats and replace any with incorrectly welded seat-back frames free of charge. The recall began on February 28, 2017.
