GM Recalls 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Vehicles for Headlight Identification Defect
General Motors is recalling 2016 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles because headlight assemblies lack a required identifier code, which may lead to improper aiming and reduced visibility.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a compliance issue where missing identification codes may lead to improper headlight aiming during service, increasing crash risk. No injuries or deaths are reported, and the defect is a labeling/compliance issue rather than an active mechanical failure, fitting the Moderate criteria for low-risk or compliance-related recalls.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2016 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured between November 5, 2015, and May 26, 2016. The recall involves 32,913 vehicles. The headlight assemblies on these vehicles are not marked with a three-digit identifier code used to properly aim the headlights. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Assoc. Equipment."
Without the identification code, the headlights may be improperly aimed during service. This can reduce nighttime visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
GM will mail owners instructions and adhesive labels with the correct code to install on their headlight assemblies. Owners may also bring the vehicle to a GM dealership for assistance with applying the label, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet Customer Service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
