KTM Recalls 2013-2016 Adventure Motorcycles for Brake Line Melting Risk

KTM is recalling specific 2013-2016 Adventure and Super Adventure motorcycles because a fraying wiring harness can melt the brake line, potentially causing brake failure.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that can lead to brake failure and crashes, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

KTM North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 1290 Super Adventure motorcycles manufactured between December 1, 2014, and March 10, 2016, as well as 2013-2016 1190 Adventure and Adventure R motorcycles manufactured between November 20, 2012, and April 25, 2016. The recall affects a total of 7,801 vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the wiring harness can fray and come into contact with the ABS modulator. If the brake line is electrically conductive, this contact may cause the brake line to overheat and melt. If the brake line melts, brake failure may result, which increases the risk of a crash.

KTM will notify owners, and dealers will re-position the wiring harness for the electronic control unit free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
