What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the seat belt assembly that fails to meet federal safety standards and explicitly states the defect may increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 X1, MINI, Rolls-Royce Ghost, and 528i vehicles. The recall involves approximately 15,455 units where the vehicle-sensitive locking mechanism of the driver's seat belt Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) may not lock as designed. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."
In the event of a crash involving heavy braking, the ELR may activate when the occupant is positioned more forward in the seat, which may increase the risk of injury. The affected models include the 2016-2017 X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i, 2016-2017 MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper and Cooper S, 2017 MINI Cooper Clubman and Cooper S Clubman, 2017 Rolls-Royce Ghost, and 2016 528i.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's seat belt assembly free of charge. The recall began on July 3, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
