BMW Recalls 2016-2017 MINI Clubman for Side Air Bag Defect
BMW is recalling 2016-2017 MINI Clubman vehicles because side curtain air bags may not deploy correctly in a crash, increasing injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bags) where failure to deploy increases the risk of injury in a crash, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 MINI Clubman vehicles manufactured between August 19, 2015, and July 14, 2016. The recall involves 7,810 vehicles where the side curtain air bags for front seat occupants may fail to deploy in the intended positions during a crash. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."
If the side curtain air bag does not inflate as intended in the event of a crash, there is an increased risk of injury to the front seat occupants. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will modify the driver and passenger side curtain air bag covers free of charge. The recall was expected to begin on September 12, 2016.
