What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 MINI Cooper and Cooper S vehicles, as well as 2005-2008 MINI Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 5, 2005, and November 28, 2006, for the non-convertible models, and between January 5, 2005, and July 31, 2008, for the convertible models. A total of 91,800 vehicles are affected by this recall.
The recall is issued because the front passenger seat occupant detection mat may not function properly due to manufacturing, installation, and exposure issues. If the mat does not function correctly, the front passenger air bag may remain inactive even when the seat is occupied. In the event of a crash, the air bag will not deploy, which increases the risk of injury to the passenger.
MINI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat free of charge. The recall began on October 12, 2015. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
