Ford Recalls 2016 F-150 Trucks Due to Air Bag Sensor Defect
Ford is recalling 2016 F-150 trucks with Multi-Contour Seats because the passenger air bag sensor may misclassify adults as children, preventing air bag deployment.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety system failure (air bag non-deployment) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2016 F-150 trucks manufactured between April 27, 2015, and November 22, 2015. These vehicles are equipped with Multi-Contour Seats (MCS). The recall involves the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS), which is responsible for calibrating the air bag deployment level.
The defect occurs when the seat massage feature is activated, causing the OCS to incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child. If this misclassification happens, the passenger frontal air bag will not deploy during a crash, which increases the risk of injury to the occupant.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) with new software at no charge. The recall began on March 11, 2016. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
