Collins Recalls 2015 School Buses Due to Peeling Stop Arm Decals
Collins is recalling 867 model year 2015 school buses because reflective decals on the stop arms may peel off, reducing visibility to other drivers.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety device failure that increases the risk of a crash, but the source text does not report any injuries, deaths, or specific incidents, fitting the criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Collins Bus Corporation is recalling 867 model year 2015 school buses manufactured between May 1, 2015, and December 21, 2015. The affected vehicles include the DE416, DE416WR, DE500, DE516, DE516WR, DH400, DH416, DH416WR, DH500, DH516, SH400, SL400, TH400, and TL400 models. These specific buses are equipped with certain Transpec T6000, T6100, and T7000 series school bus stop arms.
The recall is necessary because the reflective decal on the stop arms may peel loose. This defect causes the stop arms to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 131, "School Bus Pedestrian Safety Devices." Without the reflective decal, the stop arms have reduced visibility to other drivers, which increases the risk of a crash.
Collins will notify owners, and the stop arm blade assemblies will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on February 22, 2016. Owners may contact Collins customer service at 1-800-533-1850 or Transpec customer service at 1-800-951-7867. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
