Navistar Recalls 2013-2015 International TranStar Trucks for Fire Risk

Navistar is recalling 2013-2015 International TranStar vehicles because a vent tube may detach, allowing engine oil to contact hot surfaces and cause a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (vent tube detachment) that creates an increased risk of fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 International TranStar vehicles manufactured between April 10, 2012, and December 12, 2014. The recall involves 63 vehicles. The defect is related to the engine and engine cooling system, specifically the crankcase ventilation breather.

Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather. If this occurs, engine oil may come into contact with hot surfaces, which increases the risk of a fire.

Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Navistar. Dealers will secure the ends of the 90-degree elbow and reprogram the electronic control module (ECM) with software that adjusts engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressures. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2015. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or Cummins customer service at 1-800-343-7357.
