Nissan is recalling specific 2008-2009 Infiniti and Nissan GT-R vehicles because a steering column defect may cause loss of steering, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (steering column) that may result in a loss of steering, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2008 Infiniti EX35 vehicles, 2009 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles, and 2009 Nissan GT-R vehicles. The recall affects vehicles manufactured between specific dates in 2007 and 2008. The defect involves the steering column outer tube, which may not be round, applying extra stress to the upper steering bearing.

This stress may cause the bearing retainer to fracture, resulting in extra play in the steering wheel or a possible loss of steering. These conditions may increase the risk of a crash. The recall began on March 9, 2015.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft on the Infiniti EX35, FX35, and FX45 vehicles, and will replace the steering column assembly on the Nissan GT-R vehicles, free of charge. Infiniti owners may contact customer service at 1-800-662-6200, and Nissan owners may contact the GT-R hotline at 1-866-668-1487.
