GM Recalls 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice Police Vehicles for Shift Lever Defect
General Motors is recalling 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicles because a defective shift lever may allow the vehicle to move from Park without braking or roll away.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shift interlock failure) that creates a significant risk of crash and injury, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice vehicles manufactured between March 24, 2011, and December 6, 2013. These specific vehicles are Police Patrol Vehicles (PPV) equipped with a transmission selector lever containing two pins that can become displaced. The recall affects 7,598 vehicles.
If the pins become displaced, the driver may be able to shift the vehicle from "Park" without depressing the brake pedal, or remove the ignition key without the transmission being in "Park." This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 102 and No. 114. Unintended motion or the vehicle rolling away increases the risk of a crash and injury to occupants or bystanders.
The recall began on October 27, 2014. Dealers will replace the shift lever roll pin, replace the base pivot pin, and attach a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock retention enhancement clip free of charge. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
