GM Recalls 2014-2016 Chevrolet SS and Caprice for Seat Belt Defect
General Motors is recalling 2014-2016 Chevrolet SS and Caprice Police Pursuit vehicles because the driver's seat belt tensioner cable may separate, increasing injury risk in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a structural vehicle defect (seat belt tensioner cable separation) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, aligning with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit vehicles manufactured between May 14, 2013, and June 14, 2016, and Chevrolet SS vehicles manufactured between May 15, 2013, and April 27, 2016. The recall involves approximately 15,486 vehicles.
The defect involves the driver's seat belt tensioner cable, which may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle. This repeated bending can cause the cable to fatigue and separate. If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tensioner cable assembly, replacing any cable that is damaged. For vehicles that do not require a tensioner assembly replacement, a cable guide will be installed. All vehicles will receive new seat trim with a redesigned opening for the cable routing. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on November 3, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
