GM Recalls 2011 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon for Transmission Defect

General Motors is recalling 2011 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks because the shift lever may not accurately reflect the transmission gear position, creating a risk of the vehicle rolling away.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shift cable) that poses a significant risk of injury or property damage if the vehicle rolls away, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

General Motors is recalling certain model year 2011 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon passenger vehicles equipped with a 2.9 or 3.7 liter engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. The recall addresses a failure to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 102 and No. 114 regarding transmission shift lever sequence and theft protection.

The defect involves an automatic transmission adjustment clip that may not retain the shift cable in the correct position. If the cable is misaligned, the PRNDL shift lever may not accurately reflect the actual position of the transmission gear. A driver might move the shifter to "Park" and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not actually be in "Park."

This condition could result in the vehicle rolling away as the driver or other occupants exit the vehicle, potentially striking them or others nearby, or causing a crash without prior warning. The driver may also be unable to restart the vehicle. GM dealers will install a new automatic transmission adjustment clip free of charge. The safety recall was expected to begin on or about July 19, 2011.
